It was the largest silver dollar hoard discovered in decades. After his death, in 1976, his silver dollar hoard (collection) was sold at auction. The price paid by the winning dealer was a record breaking 7.3 million dollars. Prior to the auction, companies that were to bid on the collection were unable to look through all of the coins due to Binion Silver Dollar Hoard. Ted Binion, a Las Vegas casino tycoon and playboy, was found dead in his Nevada mansion in 1998. In the wake of his death, authorities discovered a 12-foot deep hidden vault in the desert that Binion used to house over six tons of silver bullion. Among the bullion were more than 100,000 vintage silver dollars. The most notable of the Peace Dollars from the hoard were the 1925-S, 1927-S and 1928-S. Today, most of the coins from the Redfield hoard have been well disbursed throughout the market, and tracing a coin to the group now is difficult. A few however, remain in their original plastic holders as they were sold by Paramount. The practically 925,000 silver dollars it offered sold out though, within two weeks of the commencement of the sale. This left about 55,000 silver dollars to dispose of by the time the GSA announced the seventh and final sale, which happened during July 1980. Bidders consumed the remaining 1880-CC, 1881-CC, and 1885-CC silver dollars in the hoard. How Many Silver Dollars Did He Hoard? By the time Lavere Redfield died in 1976, there were more than 40 bags of coins tucked away in his cellar. Each of these bags contained approximately 1,000 silver dollars. In all, Redfield had amassed a hoard of silver dollars that topped 400,000.
